Trace the path of the Volga Germans from their initial departure point in Germany to the Russian entry point of Kronstadt across from St. Petersburg, and on to the city of Saratov on the Volga river! Get a feel for the Hessian culture that the colonists carried with them to Russia as well as the bounteous Volga River Valley around Saratov, their ultimate destination. Take the opportunity to make village visits to the places your ancestors called home. Along the way, tour the classic sites of Russia’s two most important cities, St. Petersburg and Moscow.

  • Walking tour of Budingen along with a guided tour the Budingen Castle
  • Make a visit to Kronstadt, the naval fortress founded by Peter the Great on an island in the Gulf of Finland eighteen miles northwest of St. Petersburg; it was for most colonists the entry point into Russia, akin to New York City’s Ellis Island.
  • Admire the luminous Amber Room at Catherine’s Palace and the world-class Hermitage Museum in UNESCO-listed St. Petersburg
  • Walk the bricks of UNESCO-listed Red Square with its fancifully-decorated onion-domed St. Basil’s Cathedral, icons of imperial Russia.
